Round 7 Match Review vs Lions
Written by Choco
Monday, 28 June 2010 11:12

The Hawks headed up to North London for a rematch against the Lions who just got the better of us on a wet day at Motspur park on ladies day in round 1. The first quarter got underway with the lions posting an early goal which the Hawks immediately responded to through a superb Jimmy Mal checkside from a narrow angle. The Hawks thought they had another after Katsy kicked truly from 50 only to have the goal disallowed.

On a very hot day, the strong Lions forward line bolstered with key aussie forwards were running ragged and kicking truly with the wind leaving the hawks gasping for water and chasing leather. In true Hawks spirit, they came out fighting again in the 2nd quarter, working hard both with the ball and without it. The Hawks were rewarded for their run after Choco picked up the ball on the wing, and was well shepherded through 6 bounces and kicking truly for a fantastic team goal. After Patty and Lints both snapped truly, the Hawks had finished the quarter with 3 goals to the Lion’s 1.

The third quarter started terribly for the Hawks, with Lions piling on goals. The last 15 minutes was very good however with Wardy kicking truly and the boys holding the ball in the forward line with good pressure. Benny and Beads were doing a terrific job, taking several contested marks and relieving the pressure. Wardy and Alex were tireless in the middle, running hard all day.

The last quarter had the Hawks coming home with the breeze and doing their best to finish the game by focusing on teamwork and supporting eachother. It paid off with the side pushing forward on numerous occasions and Patty getting his second goal.

A week off for the Aussies as the Euro boys partake in the eagerly awaited Brit cup in Southampton next weekend. The club is right behind the Euro boys and wishes them all the best!

The Wimbledon Hawks are very pleased to announce our partnership with the Clapham Junction Walkabout for 2010 and hopefully beyond.

The Clapham Junction Walkabout http://www.walkabout.eu.com/home/venues/london/clapham recently opened just off Lavender Hill, providing a perfect spot for Aussies and sports fans to take in all the World Cup, Wimbledon and Summer Cricket action in a relaxed atmosphere with great food, drinks all at great prices with a superb beer garden and dozens of big flat screen televisions.

The Hawks believe that a partnership with such a lively and well known pub is an ideal opportunity to provide the best entertainment for our players and supporters off the field. It also serves to help Hawks recruitment, provide a meeting place for a quick cold beer and feed after training as well as a big club function in a reserved area.

Get down to the Walkabout for a great night out and to help develop a long term partnership that will grow and develop over the years to come.

Hawks Vs Demons Match Review
Written by Choco

The only Sunday game for the year at Clapham Common against the Demons started well with the Hawks nose behind at the first change and winning plenty of the tough contested ball and moving it well. With 3 ruckman out for the clash, it was up to Euro boys Joe Healy and Mark Bates to shoulder the challenge in the middle and they did so fantastically, getting plenty of hit-outs and possession around the field. A goal to Wardy capped off a solid start.

Unfortunately the second quarter lapses of concentration and injuries to 2 key defenders made the difference on the day, with the Demons kicking clear, although the Hawks still posted goals to new boys Benny and Lints.

The Hawks regrouped at half time, focused on the positives and encouraging the good efforts and were again winning the hard ball and pressing forward hard. Ben kicked his second and Katsy got a well deserved goal in an even quarter of football.

The final quarter started with the Hawks posting another goal or two through Lints as well as many forays forward and Katsy hitting a suspiciously acute post which was previously obtuse when Demons were heading to that end... Unfortunately a few quick goals to the Demons undid all the hard work as the Wandsworth demons ran quickly on the rebound and exploited their open forward line.

A terrific effort from the Hawks, posting a number of goals. The EU boys especially doing a great job. However, it showed that lapsing for a quarter can turn a contest away from you too quickly.
