The week leading up to the clash with the traditional rivals – the Swans – the Hawks squad were keen to hit the game hard. A spate of injuries and holidays meant that there was a full squad of 24 players unavailable for the game and the depth of the Hawks squad would be tested.
The opening quarter opened up with the Hawks ferociously jumping on every ball, loose or contested. After Wardy kicked the opening goal of the game and gun Irishman Fitzy put on another, the Hawks home crowd were jubilant. The Hawks in front at the first change.
The second quarter saw a goal a piece with new tussle haired Mark Braendler proving too skilful for the Swans defence. The swans were frustrated and even their gun recruit from Carlton F.C. was struggling to get hands on the ball such was the determination of his Hawks player-coach Choco and his troops. Hawks up by 2 goals at main change.
The hawks then extended their lead through Marky B kicking his second and captain courageous Katsy tearing up the midfield and slotting one. The swans kicked the first in the last quarter, and then another, getting to within a kick of the hawks. With a few minutes left on the clock, the Swans hit the lead for the first time of the day and the cup runneth was sadly over for the courageous, but tired hawks. A brilliant effort by the lads, with the crowd showing full support for their hardness at the ball.

With a perfect weather forecast and a 1960s double decker bus full of cheerful hawkers and £400 of beers and champagne, it was always going to be a brilliant day. A crew of 65 players, WAGs and friends headed down to Epsom Derby Races on Saturday 5th June for a day in the sunshine.
Arriving with plenty of time before the first races and already a few drinks and strawberries with cream in our bellies, the Hawker punters turned to the race guide to study the form. Plenty of form from our own fillies also, with no shortage of flowing dresses, hats and fascinators and stylish sunnies.
Securing a spot right by the track with the blow up pools full of ice in close proximity for easy access to cool refreshing beverages and no shortage of food, the Hawks were set for a blinder of an afternoon.
There was certainly a surprise thrown in as the group was brought together for a group photo, only to have Smokey propose to his lovely girlfriend Candice! The Hawks family wish them all the best.
Plenty of wins and plenty of losses over the course of the day and by the time 6pm rolled around, there was no risk of the party not kicking on back in London. The crew headed back on the bus with the drinks still flowing and off to the new Walkabout in Clapham for a night of revelry.
Another top Hawkers social function well organised by the social committee demonstrating the great social aspect of being involved with the Hawks! |
